“Can I lose weight with intuitive eating?”
“Can I eat intuitively and still want to lose weight?”
I hear these questions all the time.
And I get it. I really do.
We live in a world where weight loss is often sold as the key to everything: acceptance, belonging, health, and happiness. Doctors, magazines, social media, and even well-meaning friends constantly tell us that thinner equals better. It’s like the answer to all our problems. Want to be happier? Lose weight. Want to be more successful? Lose weight. Want to be healthier? Lose weight.
We’ve been taught to believe that our worth is tied to our body size, that control equals success, and that hunger is something to fight instead of listen to. So we diet. We count. We obsess. We celebrate when the scale goes down, and we despair when it goes up.
Of course, someone new to Intuitive Eating might wonder: Can I do this and still lose weight?
But before I answer that question, let me briefly explain Intuitive eating. (Find the long explanation here)
What is Intuitive Eating?
Now, imagine a world where food isn't the enemy. Eating isn’t about restriction, guilt, or counting every calorie. It’s about truly listening to your body’s needs and desires. That’s the essence of Intuitive Eating: a non-diet approach that helps you reconnect with your hunger and fullness cues, break the diet-binge cycle, and build a healthier relationship with food.
Can I lose weight with intuitive eating?
The truth is, intuitive eating isn’t about weight loss. Not because your body doesn’t matter, but because it matters too much to be reduced to a number.
Intuitive eating is about healing. It’s about making peace with food, learning to trust yourself again, and finding freedom in nourishment rather than fear.
And when you start listening to your body (really listening), three things can happen:
Your weight might go down.
Your weight might stay the same.
Your weight might go up.
I know that the last one might feel scary. But hear me out: your body is always working to protect you. Years of dieting, restriction, and food guilt may have pushed it into survival mode. Intuitive eating helps your body exhale and find its natural, stable weight without the constant fight.
My Story
I spent years chasing the "perfect" way of eating. I jumped from one diet plan to another. I tracked every calorie, avoided "bad" foods, ate "paleo" (I even had a food blog called "Paleo Friendly Food" that I later sold), and followed all the rules. Yet, no matter how clean I ate, I never felt free.
When I found Intuitive Eating, it wasn’t easy. Letting go of control was terrifying at first. But little by little, I started listening to my body, honoring my hunger, eating foods I once feared (hello, pizza), and trusting that my body knew what it was doing.
I deleted MyFitnessPal and stopped taking before-and-after pictures to measure progress. Instead, I measured it in freedom: being able to go out to dinner without stress, enjoy birthday cake without guilt, and nourish myself without fear.
My body settled where it needed to be. But more importantly, so did my mind.
The Real Question You Should Be Asking
So maybe the question isn’t “Can I lose weight with intuitive eating?” but rather:
"What would it feel like to stop fighting my body and start trusting it?"
Because at the end of the day, intuitive eating isn’t about giving up. It’s about coming home, to yourself, to feel free, to trust yourself, your hunger, to the life you were meant to live.
And that? That’s a kind of nourishment that no diet can ever give you.
Take care,
Laura
